How firemodel is different

Plan as a couple, or just you

Most free tools model one person. firemodel plans for two: separate pots, separate retirement dates, and proper UK tax for each. Singles are equally welcome.

Use it without saving a thing

Your numbers stay in your browser as you plan, with no account and nothing sent to a server. Saving your plan and tracking it over time is launching as an invitation-only beta, which you can request but never have to.

Every assumption is visible and adjustable. No black box. You can see the maths behind your projection and change any input you disagree with.

Am I on track to retire?

Most people have no clear answer to this question, and most tools make it harder than it needs to be. The honest answer depends on three things: what you have now (pensions, savings, property), what you'll contribute before you retire, and what you want to spend in retirement.

firemodel puts those three things together in a few minutes and gives you a straight answer: on track, short, or close enough to tell which levers to pull. You can adjust your retirement age, your target income, and your contributions to see what changes. Nothing is stored between sessions. Refresh the page and you start fresh.

How much pension do I need?

The most useful benchmark in the UK is the PLSA Retirement Living Standards (Loughborough University, updated June 2025). These figures are net of tax and exclude housing costs:

PLSA Retirement Living Standards 2025: annual income needed
StandardOne person / yrCouple / yr
Minimum£13,400£21,600
Moderate£31,700£43,900
Comfortable£43,900£60,600

These are the income targets firemodel uses in its verdict. Bear in mind they exclude housing costs. If you're still paying a mortgage or renting in retirement, your target will be higher.

The gap between what you need and what you have (from pensions, savings, and the state pension) is the number that matters, and that's exactly what firemodel calculates.

What about the State Pension?

The full new State Pension for 2026/27 is £12,548 a year (£241.30 a week). You need 35 qualifying National Insurance years to receive the full amount, and at least 10 years to receive anything.

The State Pension age is currently 66, rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028. If you're under 50 today, plan for 67 as a minimum. Legislation to raise it further is already on the table.

Notice that the full State Pension (£12,548/yr) almost covers the PLSA minimum for a single person (£13,400/yr), but it leaves around £19,000 a year short of a moderate retirement. That gap is what your private pension and savings need to fill.

firemodel includes the State Pension automatically in its projections. For the most accurate result, get your personal forecast from gov.uk and enter the actual figure.
